“Okay, let's get this over with. I'll give you five minutes. Five from forty-five. In these five minutes, you can do whatever you want. After that, I want you to be quiet for the rest of the period.”
Jürgen has always been the victim. He gets bullied and left out of everything. But now there is a new kid at school. This is Jürgen's chance. He goes on the offensive and provokes the new student. An unpleasant situation for the new kid, but he sees his own opportunity. Jürgen attempts to divide the class' sympathies. The other children must choose which side to take and how they are going to react. In doing so, they are confronted with their own behavior. The setting: the classroom.
With “First Hour,” Jörg Menke-Peitzmeyer has written a powerful play about the ever-present issue of school bullying. Without pointing his finger at anyone in particular and with a large dose of humor, he succeeds in confronting school children in their typical surroundings, the classroom, in a direct and gripping way.
For the youth theatre department, “First Hour” marks the first in a series of plays that does not take place on a theatre stage, but in the classroom. Our aim is to reach out to children and youths not only through performance, but with discussions as well.

‚Erste Stunde‘ sei der Auftakt zu einer ganzen Reihe von Stücken, die nicht auf der Bühne spielen, sondern im Klassenzimmer, mitten unter Schülern. In die entstandene Stille hinein riss Zarnack die Tür auf und stürmte in den Raum. Sein Jürgen Rickert zeigt eine Entschlossenheit, die ihm nicht leicht fällt. Eigentlich fürchtet er sich. Wieder einmal hat er wegen Mobbing die Schule gewechselt. Jetzt geht er in die Offensive. Was hat er schon zu verlieren? (…) Zarnack alias Jürgen wendet sich mit seinem Text nicht nur an die fiktiven Schüler seines Textbuches, sondern auch und vor allem an die realen Jugendlichen. (…) Zweifellos gelang es Zarnack, seine Zuschauer in Atem zu halten. ‚Das war sehr emotional‘, meinte ein Jugendlicher in der anschließenden Diskussion.
